National Policy for Women

The development of a nation solely depends on the social status of the women. As women constitute around 50% of the population, they have a major say in the development. In spite of her contribution in development, she still belongs to a backward class on account of various social, political, economic and psychological barriers.

There are various National policy and programs enacted by the government which could help them to come at equal position with their counterparts.

In 2016, the union government of India has unveiled the draft of national policy for women aimed at "re scripting" women's empowerment by following a "socially inclusive right based approach." It was released by the Ministry of women and child development (MWCD).

Some of the key features of the national policy for women, 2016 are:-

1) The policy is roughly based on the RAM Rajput committee report said by mwcd in 2012 which submitted its recommendations in 2016, including a suggested national policy for women and an action plan to end violence against women.

2) Maternal and paternal mortality will remain a priority area.

3) It aims is to implement a "gender transformative health strategy. "

4) It focuses on prioritising the nutritional of women of all ages and strengthening geriatric services to address women aged above 60, who form 8.4 % of the population.

5) It tries to address the problem of navigating the distance from home to school by suggesting "innovative transportation models

6) Community programs to instil respect for women in men from a young age.

Though the policy aim at women empowerment and tries to take into consideration the interests of the women it is silent about the issue of Marital rape. However, making legislations alone is not sufficient, there is a need of social attitude towards women and also there is need to change the behaviour of men and boys towards women.
