STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress, it is an inevitable persuasive phenomenon. Nobody have ever been escaped from stress. Not only in our personal lives but in our work life also. Stress is everywhere.
                        In the cut throat competitive era of business, every job is challenging and more demanding nowadays. And with every challenging task, more responsibilities and skills are required to perform the role. And this pressure somewhere result in stress. 

  •  According to Oxford Dictionary, Stress means "physical or mental strain."

  • Cox (1993) defines, “Stress is now understood as a psychological state that results from people’s perceptions of an imbalance between job demands and their abilities to cope with those demands.”

  •  Health and Safety Commission (1999) defines, “Stress is the reaction that people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed upon them.” 
  •  Aswathappa. K (2007) defines, “Stress is an adaptive response to an external situation that results in physical, psychological and / or behavioural deviations for organization participations.”  

  •  Stephen P. Robbins  (2007) has defined “Stress is a dynamic condition in which an individual is confronted with an opportunity, demand, or  resource related to what the individual desires and for which the outcome is perceived to be both uncertain and important.”

Stress is basically an adaptive response to situations or event or any external cause due to which an individual deviates from his normal functioning.

TYPES OF STRESS 

1. EUSTRESS
Stress isn't always provide negative outcomes. Sometimes, it enhances our performance level and efficiency too. The amount of stress which have positive impact on the performance of an individual is termed as Eustress. It is short - term stress which provides strength to raise the performance level.

2. DISTRESS
Sometimes, stress adversely affect the performance of an individual and results into negative outcome. The amount of the stress which have negative impact on the performance of an individual is termed as Distress. This stress results into various types of physical, psychological and behavioural problems. There are two kinds of  distress such as:  

a) Acute stress
 Acute stress is an intense stress that arrives and disappears quickly.

b) Chronic stress
 Such kind of stress that exists for weeks, or even years. An individual who is constantly relocating or  contemplating job changes may experience such kind of stress.
